Review: I discovered hot Mulligan last year. I quickly became one of their top listeners on Spotify. I had been hearing the term Midwest emo for a while now, but didn’t know what it really meant. It was actually TikTok that got me to understand it, watching people pay Midwest emo guitar over popular television scenes. It turns out I had been a fan of Midwest emo for a few decades, most notable American Football.
What I love so much about hot. Mulligan is the duet vocals. Similar to bands like Taking Back Sunday, you have a clean vocalist and a dirty vocalist. And the guitars are just fantastic.
The setlist couldn’t have been more perfect. It was like a greatest hits, in my opinion. They played my five favorite songs: “Bon Jonah” and “Monica Lewinskibidi” from “The Sound Your Body Makes” and all three songs from the “Warmer Weather” EP.
The band opened with “Bckyrd,” which was a great way to get everyone quickly on board.
I haven’t been inside of the Palladium in a very long time. This was where I saw my first ever concert: Fingertight, The Juliana Theory, and Our Peace. All of these years later, attending emo and punk rock shows is still a favorite pastime. Over the last few years, I attended outdoor shows at The Palladium like Neck Deep and The Story So Far and a mini festival of Yellowcard, Story of the Year and Mayday Parade.
As you can tell fro my pictures, it’s not an easy venue to photograph at. All of my concert photography is all done by my cell phone anyway, but I was a little further back at the show and it seemed like the light made it a little difficult.
It’s a good venue. Drinks definitely seem cheaper than MGM Music Hall. They have a few floors there, including seating up top. I am not sure if this was reserved. I did notice a pretty good VIP section towards the back with seating and a staff member.
